"You guys are unique, as original and innovative as the Beatles and the Beach Boys when they first appeared. Every song is different, no two are the same. Every bassline, harmony and guitar part means something. It's all so beautiful, it all works. I was blown away tonight!" - Richard Shotton, percussionist

An American Point Of View of the album MUSAIC. Hi, all LONGWAVE/SWAY fans, here's my critique...
ON MY OWN IN A CROWD... Jumped out at me. Reminds me of a Dave Davies composition, could be right off of "Something Else" by the Kinks, right next to "Waterloo Sunset". YELLOW MOON... Starts off like "Fancy", by the Kinks (did I mention, they are my favourite band?). Song mentions "rain", a great motiff I use a lot in my songs. Killer fuzz guitar. JULY SKIES... Cool musaic floors. ICHABOD....Ichabod, in the Old Testament, was a cursed man. Is this one cursed? RADIO FOUR SONG... Reminds me of "Just Another Day", by Sir Paul McCartney. ALL THAT I NEED... I wish I had written this one! YOU CAN'T LOOK BACK....Great driving rhythm/beat from beginning... reminds me of "We Can Be Together", by Jefferson Airplane". Good message, too! MENDIP... A message from outer space? SINGER... All about people like you and me, isn't it? We'll never change. VICAR OF THE ORANGE HAIR... Very brilliant mixture of Celtic, Olde English, heavy metal. I love it! WHEN EVERYTHING GOES RIGHT... A good, penultimate song to almost end the collection. SHE'S MY KIND... Californian sunshine harmonies meet New York Night Time City Lightshine Cool!

(Dan met Dain at a Santa Monica, California bus stop in October, 2000. They then proceeded to busk "Barbara Ann", "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Help".)

"Absolutely brilliant... But you don't need me to tell you do you, you surely already know" - Andrew Webb, songwriter, musician

"That was great, you sound so much like the band America" - Chico Holton, singer, songwriter, guitarist

A review that appeared in Beach Boys Stomp,
the official U.K. BASED fan club for the band;
Longwave - Musaic... (SWOO1)
Always happy to give a mention to Stomp subscribers out there that are making music and putting it onto CD. Longwave is a band that includes Stomp subscriber Dan Russell. Longwave's
sound has been compared to America, the Eagles,
C.S.N.Y., Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan. Add to that list the Beach Boys, Association and the Byrds
(especially the 12 string guitar on "You Can't Look
Back"). "Musaic" was a nice surprise, melodic original songs with nice vocals and some cool guitar sounds. To me the songs have a very sixties feel to them and are no worse for that. I really liked the opening "On My Own In A Crowd", "You Can't Look Back" and "She's My Kind". The whole album is thoroughly enjoyable and can be obtained through the Longwave website."
Mike Grant, Editor "Beach Boys Stomp".

" Hi, Pork Chunk! Listened to the "Musaic" album a few times. Some of the songs do grow on you... like mould on an old slipper! Seriously though, pop pickers, it was a shame so much work and good ideas went into some ordinary songs. However, let me tell you what I liked.
The last track... when it finished! No, Ichabod is a great song, made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. Reminded me of my childhood.... Noggin the Nog and stuff. Fantastic harmony vocals, too. My wife, Chris, loved it also... mainly because it wasn't one of your songs! Also, You Can't Look Back, loved it. I must admit, listening to it on headphones, the album is very professionally done, lots going on. Go easy on those pies!"
Simon Perigud, acoustic finger picker, singer songwriter and old friend and erst while bandmate of Dan's in "Wine Dark Sea", circa 1995.

I really like the Musaic track "Singer". It has some very interesting chord changes. D major 7, G major 7 and
A major 7 in the verses, then switching to D minor 7 then F major 7, G major 7, A major 7 on the choruses. The minor chord matches the defiance in the line "I'm a singer, I sing my song". It reminds me of that old song "from major to minor". I can really relate to the fighting against conformity lyric, also. I like the juxtaposition of the catchy pop song melody hiding the more hard hitting words. And as a guitarist, I think the Dan Russell fuzz guitar solo, although not Steve Vai, and simple in construction, is very uplifting
and very effective, like the "singer's" soul being released through his craft. An altogether excellent song.

Although Dan Russell writes pretty melodies, I don't see his songs lending thereselves to Beach Boys style vocal arrangements. It would be a better man than I to do that, anyway. Perhaps Brian Wilson?!

I listened to your numbers and I do find them great! You're really into the stuff I love! Your sound is beautiful, and yet still original. And I did love Radio Four Song.

Great songs, like your style. Best wishes from "Doris Day" and the Elaynes from Hamburg.
JoJo of German band Elayne.

Not bad for an aging rocker!(Dan). I like all their songs, but you should hear "Too Old To Grow Up", one of my all time faves!(from the Sunset Run album "Oh Yeah!"). Keep up the good work Popz!

son of Dan Russell.

Wow! Fantastic! What an original sound. Something for everyone here.
